Creating a place to learn, belong, and participate
In the early 1990s, opportunities for children with disabilities in Olancho were extremely limited. Some remained at home, shaped by social stigma, a lack of specialized education, and families having few resources or tools to support their needs. Nazareth School was founded in 1996 with eight students in response to that reality. What began as a small educational initiative has grown into a community where children and youth with disabilities are recognized for their abilities, supported in their individual development, and given opportunities to learn, communicate, build independence, and participate more fully in family and community life. Today, Nazareth serves 94 students from five municipalities and has supported approximately 500 families since its founding.
Why this work still matters
Nearly three decades later, access to inclusive and specialized education remains limited. The most recent departmental data available found that

of children ages 2–17 in Olancho experience at least one functional difficulty, including areas related to learning, communication, hearing, vision, or mobility.
At Nazareth, every student receives an individualized educational approach. Teachers and professionals work across academic learning, communication, motor development, socialization, daily living skills, and vocational preparation, recognizing that progress looks different for every student. For one child, progress may mean learning to read. For another, it may mean expressing a need, participating in a classroom activity, preparing food, navigating a daily routine more independently, or developing skills for adult life.
The goal is not for every student to follow the same path. It is for every student to have a path forward.
Nazareth's impact extends beyond the classroom.
Current school records report a 98% student retention rate, while approximately 95% of students have developed greater independence in everyday activities. The school is also expanding Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), vocational learning, occupational activities, and family support. Every student currently receives financial support according to family circumstances, helping ensure that the cost of specialized education does not become another barrier. Yet demand continues to grow: 19 students are currently waiting for a place at Nazareth, while access to specialized therapy remains limited.

Inclusion is built together
Nazareth has never been the work of one person or one institution. Its classrooms are shaped every day by Honduran educators and professionals, students, families, local organizations, and the wider Olancho community. Through Olancho Aid, local expertise is strengthened by educational partnerships, professional collaboration, and relationships with universities and partners from Honduras and abroad.
That shared participation is what allows Nazareth to continue growing from eight students in 1996 to a community that has accompanied hundreds of families across Olancho. The work continues, and there is still room for more people to be part of it. Whether through financial support, professional expertise, educational partnership, or long-term collaboration, every contribution can help expand access to inclusive education for the next generation of students at Nazareth.
